Kevin Zhu (He/Him)
What year are you in and what are you studying?
5th year, Computing Science with Specialization
What’s one thing you’re incredibly passionate about?
Foreign Policy
How long have you been debating for?
1 year.
I've always been adjacently interested, but I've never really had the time to try it until my final semester. Three affable people managed to convince me at club fair and that was that.
What led you to try debate for the first time?
What do you love most about UADS?
I love how surreal it is — you can go from debating the most depraved, dark topics to joking around together outside the room in two seconds flat.
I've had a ton of great memories over my short tenure, from fooling around at Pro-Ams to nov breaking at Pac Cup, but the one that still sticks out the most is my first time debating ever. I was up against Eamon who was absolutely CONVINCED he'd win with the special motion he had prepared, and was already pre-emptively apologizing for my loss. However, Rajesh gave me a crash course in debating (which was mostly just debunking everything I had learned in the presentation minutes prior) and after this rude awakening I was feeling prepared. We enter the room and it turns out this special motion was essentially "Should we make the president butcher a citizen to be able to start nuclear war?". The next 34 minutes were an indescribable blur, but I remember passionately arguing for the most utterly reprehensible ideas. Sentences which should never leave the room were flung openly and without abandon, splattering the walls. After what seemed an eternity, the dust settled, and the verdict was announced. Despite the odds, our team actually won! Rajesh and I would go on to be in the same room for the next 2 rounds, and even get paired up for our last debate in the term, where we won on an (even more!) offensive topic. This positively nuclear round was my first introduction to debate, and I've loved it ever since.
What’s one of your favourite UADS memories?
Using one word, what’s a topic you could forever debate about?
Nukes
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new debaters?
It's much faster to learn at the beginning by reading up on what you're supposed to do rather than just going on trial and error. I wasn't aware there was any "constructive" part I had to give in my speech until my first tournament- you can imagine how I fared there.
You’re held over the Darvaza gas crater and will only be safely released if you can sing all the lyrics to a song correctly. What is that song?
Lose Yourself; I memorized the lyrics as a joke years back but haven't been able to forget them since.
What is a favourite quote of yours and who is it by?
"Maybe there are forces in this universe we don't understand. But I still believe we make our own miracles." - Huey Freeman
If your friends had to describe you using 3 words, those words would be…
What’s one of your biggest regrets?
Bubbly, Ambitious, Outspoken
Not joining debate club earlier lmao get on it kids (Fariha’s comment: You heard the man!!)
