Equity
What is equity?
Equity is ensuring that everyone can participate in debate and feel safe, comfortable, and equal while doing so. Equity applies regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability status. The Equity policy applies to all tournament organizers, debaters, judges, and spectators at the tournaments, socials, and club meetings/activities.
Equity is not only for “serious offences.”
If someone is making you or others uncomfortable in any way, please approach/contact an equity officer or fill out the anonymous equity form. They exist to deal with your concern discretely and compassionately.
YOU have a huge say in what action is taken by the equity team.
-
The equity officer will address your concern based on what the complainant feels is appropriate, within reason. If you choose to say who you are, the equity team will work with you to best address the concern.
-
If someone makes you feel uncomfortable at anytime, you are encouraged to file a complaint. Some examples include (although this list is NOT exhaustive):
Making sweeping generalizations about a gender, race, ethnicity etc.
Talking badly about a team behind their backs.
Make rude expressions (ex. Eye rolling) or laugh while someone is speaking.
Purposefully misgendering people.
Attack the person instead of the argument.
-
If you wish to file an equity complaint, you may do so through:
Filling out the equity form (you can remain anonymous through this method). This form is accessible by all equity offiicers.
Talking to an individual equity officer, using their contact information below.
-
If you have an equity complaint about another equity officer, you may contact one of the other equity officers personally. Confidentiality will be maintained.
-
No, equity is distinct from the executive as per our constitution. The executive is not involved in equity decisions, and matters brought to equity are not shared with the executive.
